PREMISE: This is a side story based on the PC Engine/Turbo Graphix 16 game Dungeon Explorer....
IMPRESSIONS: You know, I wish Hudson had ported the whole of Dungeon Explorer over. It's not bad (except perhaps for that Disneyesque music), but I expected more. Still, RPG fans might find it an interesting diversion. |

PREMISE: The tale of a group of refugees fleeing a totalitarian society and the efforts by their opressors to track them down. Ported from the PC Engine original.
IMPRESSIONS: Pretty decent, once you wade past the overly long no-you- can't-skip-past-this-it's-too-important intro. By that time, anybody who can't read Japanese will have already yanked the cart and plugged in something else.

PREMISE: Among the many anime TV shows that ran in Japan during 1991 was this March offering from Sunrise. It followed the fortunes of one Hayato Kazami, a Formula 1 race car driver. The game was inspired by the series.
IMPRESSIONS: Quite good, actually. Reminds me a lot of the Varie F1 titles, but with better graphics and a nice story to match. If you don't care for the story, then you can
just do the races or even try practice runs.
VARIATIONS: More commonly referred to as Cyber Formula or Cyber F1 Grand Prix. The English-language version was released under the title Cyber Spin.

PREMISE: In the not-so-distant future, mankind is waging a full scale war with itself over the dwindling resources of Earth and the Moon. Let us take a moment to reflect on
the experiences of a Pacific States Marine Corps assault suit pilot, who is an expert with his Valken. He fights not for patriotism or duty - he just wants to be the last man standing when the shooting stops. An excellent space shooter in the Gundam mold.
IMPRESSIONS: I know it's been done before, but that doesn't mean that it can't be done well again. The graphics are detailed and shaded, no enemies are repeated, and the opponent mix is unique and appropriate for each level. The cinemas are unavoidable, but they serve to explain why you are fighting a given level. Your weapons can be improved the farther you play into the game, and there are not a few
hidden secrets and surprises. A fun romp.

PREMISE: Based on the legendary 1964 manga by Ishinomori Shotaro about a Japanese cyborg who becomes the newest member of a special cyborg team battling the forces of the evil Black Ghost organization. Graphics and character design are lifted straight from the TV series adaption by anime sense Osaum Tezuka (Astroboy, Kimba the White Lion, Blackjack, In The Beginning, et al).
IMPRESSIONS: It's not that different overall from MegaMan or Mario Brothers; however, it does have the rather unique feature of letting you switch characters anytime in the game from among a group of three picked at game start. All of you share the same life energy (no help there), but each cyborg has his or her own special abilities. Not bad, and recommended for fans of the anime show. |
