PREMISE: Back in the late 1970s, an unassuming fantasy fan by the name of Gary Gygax decided to create the ultimate role- playing game for the genre. His efforts spawned the original Dungeons and Dragons - the 1000-pound gorilla of
the fantasy RPG genre and the one that pretty much set the standard for all subsequent efforts. AD&D came about as a revision of the original game, which had outgrown its rules, and itself spawned a number of subgames and
storylines - a number of which have been converted to both popular fiction and computer games. AD&D continues to have a strong following as of this date, spawning its own mini-industry in the same manner as other successful
franchises.
IMPRESSIONS: AD&D has always enjoyed a reputation of excellence, and
their computer games are no exception. They followed the typical Bard's Tale format in the beginning until the release of FTL's Dungeon Master - an event that forever redefined the look and feel of computer-based fantasy
RPGs. Eye of the Beholder was their first foray into this new school of fantasy RPGs, and it remains one of the better Dungeon Master clones to date.

VARIATIONS: Only two of the titles in the AD&D series of games appear in the SNES library.

Curse of the Azure Bonds - 1995, but originally released in 1991 for personal computers. I list it first because it is the older game, and there were plans to remake it for the SNES as a follow-up to Eye of the Beholder. It was the sequel to Pool of Radiance; the heroes from that game are placed under a unusual controlling spell and have to destroy those who created the "azure bonds" that afflict them. Due to porting problems in the design of the first game, most notably the fact that it required an accompanying book to play it properly, the project was eventually shelved. It never got past the planning stages.
Eye of the Beholder - 1993, one of the first and more successful Dungeon Master clones. Four heroes have been summoned to the town of Waterloo to deal with a mysterious evil that lives in the network of dungeons and catacombs beneath the city. "This is the game that made me fall in love with RPGs. To me, it's a wonderful classic; but to others, it's just another dungeon crawler. Lots of spells and lots of characters, but simplistic controls that don't interface very well with joysticks."

PREMISE: A trio of games based on the 1990s feature films and TV series, themselves inspired by the popular cartoons and characters created by Charles Addams for the New Yorker magazine.

IMPRESSIONS: There's not much to say about the first game, other than it's a pathetically stupid run-and-jump with SD-style characters. The second is a lot better, with noticeable improvements all around. The third changes gears
completely, and is a surprisingly good game. As Sir Radoo wrote for the SNES Cauldron, "[Addams Family Values] is a must for gamers - it combines the Addams Family and Final Fantasy together into a decent game that is sure to keep you coming back for more."

VARIATIONS: The Addams Family - 1991, run-and-jump platformer loosely
based on the feature film of the same name. Gomez Adams explores his estate in search of his missing fortune.
The Addams Family: Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt - 1992 by H-B Productions, derived from the ABC-TV animated series from about the same time. This was the second animated series based on the concept; the first was by Hanna
Barbara for NBC-TV back in the early 1970s featuring the voices of the 1960s live-action TV cast and artwork directly modeled on the original Addams artwork.
Addams Family Values - 1994, often referred to as Fester's Quest on the boards. A top-down adventure loosely derived from the feature film of the same name,
in which Uncle Fester takes over the search for the missing baby Pubert - the newest member of the family. Oftimes mistakenly referred to as Addams Family 2

PREMISE: When legendary cartoonist Frank Miller was asked by DC Comics to do a Batman graphic novel, the result was the now-legendary Batman: The Dark Knight - a book which is acknowledged by all as returning the Caped Crusader to his dark origins. This was the driving force behind Tim Burton's feature film Batman (1991), which kicked off the current film series and remains the best of the lot. The movies helped generate a new round of computer games centered on the grim Gotham vigilante, and the SNES saw its share (as did all the other major gaming plaforms). Three of the games in the SNES series are based on the feature films, while two lean more toward the original pre-Miller DC Comics series and one is based on the successful Miller-esque Warner animated TV series.
IMPRESSIONS: A decidedly mixed bag, even within the Sunsoft trio.
The one must-have is Konami's Batman and Robin. If you like the feature films, try Batman Forever. The rest are forgettable; hoever, the unreleased Software Creations title is a nice novelty that is among the harder protos to track down.

VARIATIONS: The first Batman game (1991 by Sunsoft) was based on Tim Burton's feature film starring Michael Keaton, Kim Basenger, Jack Nicholson, and Jack Palance (in an Oscar- nominated supporting role). I can find no evidence of a SNES version, but a highly acclaimed NES game exists.

Batman: Revenge of the Joker - 1992 by Sunsoft. An in-house sequel using the Batman game engine. I'm told that this was not released in the United States, but it seems to have made it to the European market. The only noticeable improvements are in the graphics.

Batman Returns - 1992 by Sunsoft. This is the "official" sequel, based on the second feature film (only slightly inferior to the first) starring Michael Keaton, Michelle Pfeiffer (mee-OOWWWRRR!!!), and Danny DeVito. Slight but noticeable graphics and gameplay improvements built upon the same old cranky game engine as before.

Batman (unreleased) - 1994 by Software Creations. A shallow side-scroll fighter with only one playable level and cloned thugs almost twice the size of Batman. Let's just say it stinks - even by proto standards.

Batman and Robin, The Adventures of - 1994 by Konami. A beautiful programming adaptation of the Warner animated TV series, and the first game in the series in which the Boy Wonder appears. The European version features a technosynth soundtrack, while the American version has music adapted from the TV soundtrack.

Batman Forever - 1995 by Acclaim. Based on the overhyped feature film starring Val Kilmer, Chris McDonnell, Jim Carey, and Tommy Lee Jones, the only memorable features are the animated U2 music video and Carey's tag line: "Riddle me this, riddle me that - who's afraid of the big bad bat?!" The game smacks of a Mortal Kombat 3 ripoff, digitized graphics and all, but has the added bonus of a plot that actually makes sense.

Kid Kleets for Super Nintendo stars a kid who's on an adventure to collect the shattered peices of a soccer trophy.
Using his soccer ball, Kid Kleets must manuever his way around many levels, including siberia and a moving train.
Although the first few levels may seem simple, as you progress it eventually becomes challenging, and the bosses are no easy feat.

There is a small story in background about lost treasure alike things, kidnapping the professor, and you needing to go rescue him. It's another platform game, that looks a bit different at the first look, but that's all more or less the same.

A vertical scrolling shooter somewhat similar to Area 88. Choose from several different pilots from various countries, each with their own unique aircraft and individual weapons systems. Fly an assortment of missions around the world, with the order of depending on which character you choose.

A less-than-perfect port of the arcade shooter. The graphics are bland and the animation stinks, but the gameplay is excellent. Worth consideration for die-hard shooter fans.
