First of all let me say that people who bash this game probably do because of the graphics. You are just being ignorant.

Of the many RPG's i have had the pleasure of playing, this one suprised me the most. I never thought a wacky game could have a great plot or game play. One minute you're some normal kid checking out a meteorite, the next you are fighting a gang called the sharks!

If there's one thing i like most about this game, it's the atmosphere. This game does a great job of making Ness's world seem almost real. The only problem is how things cost more than you'd expect. for example, a hamburger for 17 bucks?!

The battle system, music, and graphics are all very good. I also must say it s fairly esy depsite what anyone else says. As long as you take time and level up, you'll be fine. I'd recommend this game to anyone in need of a change from final fantasy or whatever.

Earthbound by ProtoZero

Introduction:
On June 1, 1995, Ape and Nintendo released the one of the greatest games of all time, Earthbound. It used to be my favorite game until I played Final Fantasy III. Before Earthbound, RPGs meant dungeons, swords, castles, and everything medieval. Earthbound changed all that. It had important role play game elements, such as leveling up, turned base fighting, and bosses. But how many games do you know have ATM machines, trout flavored yogurt, and a village that worships blue? Not many. Earthbound was the most unique game of its time. Other than unique, Earthbound is also extremely fun. Today, Earthbound has been sadly forgotten by most people. But for those who want to visit Onett town, this is for you.

Story: 10/10
It is probably the weirdest story in video games, but also the most unique. The plot is not as serious as a final fantasy game, which makes it better in my opinion. A meteor in the middle of the night awakens Ness, a young boy about the age of 13. His mother lets him go check it out. He finds a weird alien guy named Buzz Buzz. He tells him that the Giygas, another weird alien, will destroy the earth. Sounds like you average role-play game story right? Guess again. Ness goes to different towns; encounter everything from New Age Retro Hippies, to attacking taxicabs. Ness goes to eight sanctuaries to collect parts of the sound stone. The plot is also funny. There might be an obstacle that you can't get by. Just so happens, an item to get past it is conveniently in your reach. But you must beat get it. Its hard to explain, but I'll just put it this way. The plot suddenly changes into something completely different but it doesn't lose you. There are tons of surprises that I won't spoil to you. You can find them out for yourself. The story is very weird. It's genius, but weird. I loved the story enough to give it a ten. Not as near as good a Final Fantasy III, but still great.

Character Design: Good
I won't go into too much detail, but I thought this was important. The party members are Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo. Each has a different look and personality. The character design is good, not great. There are no in depth emotions with them. But I enjoyed all of them.

Graphics: 9/10
The graphics really go well with the mood in Earthbound. They are bright, cheery in most places. The graphics look almost like they're out of a cartoon. Some people might say it looks kiddy. As far as battles go, I have no complaints. All the enemies look good. It does not show Ness and company but it doesn't hurt the battles. Every battle has a colorful, almost 60's background. Overall, I think the graphic are great. You may think it looks kiddy, but I think is goes perfect with Earthbound's wackiness.

Music/Sound: 10/10
Earthbound has one of the best soundtracks in video games. Once again, the music is second all time behind Final Fantasy III. The best is the Onett song. Twoson, New Age Retro Hippie, Winters and many more are also great. The music is unforgettable; you wont turn your volume off on this game. The sound is nothing to brag about. The PSI attacks and regular hits sound normal. The sound is not bad, but it's not really that good. But because of the wonderful music, it still deserves a ten.

Game Play: 8/10
Earthbound is an RPG, but it's not like most of the others. There are no random battles. You actually get to see an enemy. It is not as frustrating as random battles because you expect them. Sometimes you can even avoid the enemy. This is a very great bonus as far as fun factor goes. You go from town to town meeting new friends as well as enemies. Paula, Jeff, and Poo join your team. They all have different personalities and fighting abilities. The battling is not perfect but it is still great. You have health points and PSI points. PSI is your main attacks. During battles you use a normal attack or use a special PSI move. You learn more attacks as you level up. The only problem in the battles is that you can't see yourself. This may not bother some people, but I would rather be able to see Ness. You can obtain items that can defeat bosses in one hit, which is kind of cheap. The bosses are really cool, and I would rather battle them. I'm not saying you can defeat every boss with a special item because you can't. But some bosses can easily be destroyed with a multi bottle rocket. The weapons you obtain are very strange. You can buy baseball bats, slingshots, frying pans, and laser guns. The puzzles can be rather tricky sometimes. There are a few spots in the game that when you beat, you hope you never have to do it again. This is the only bad part about the game play. While most of the game is very fun, some locations are nerve racking. Overall the game play is excellent. It is a very long game but none of the locations are extremely difficult. I beat the game in about 3 months. It is a very fun game almost the entire way through.

Replay Value: 9/10
The game could keep you busy for a very long time. There are certain items you can only obtain after defeating a certain enemy. Only problem is, you have a 1/128 chance of getting that item after the battle. Yeah, that might take a while. However, like I said before, there are places in the game that you might not want to do again. But the items and the fact that it is such a great game will bring you back for more,

Buy or Rent:
Well, I seriously doubt you can rent this game. It is hard enough trying to find a place to buy it. But even if you could rent it, you should still buy it. Its a great game to add to any gamer's collection. At least give it a try. You will be glad you did.

Overall: 10/10
Earthbound is cool. It changed the meaning of RPG. It is really crazy but great at the same time. Trust me, you should definitely try my SECOND favorite game ever. Even today, no game compares to its uniqueness. To describe this game in one word, it would be: genius.

----------------------------------------------------------------

made, there is also a little bleep when you navigate through your menus on the overworld or during battle, these sound effects are really all I can remember from this game, I could be missing a few though. What the game lacks in the area of sound effects, it makes up for in the music department. Earthbound has some nicely orchestrated music, it has about 5 or 6 battle themes which play depending on what enemies you're facing off with. If you're in a battle with a wacky looking human, it'll have some wacky music, if you're in a battle with some UFOs, you'll be hearing some bleepy and space sounding music, which is a nice touch that they made various battle themes as it adds on to the battle surroundings. If you've ever played Super Smash Bros. Melee, you'll hear where those great remixes came from. My favorite would be the Fourside theme.

Gameplay: 9/10
The gameplay of Earthbound is nothing any RPGer hasn't played before. You level up and gain stats just like in any other RPG but the stats in this game are quite unique, giving out such stats like IQ (well...it's the same as a Magic stat but with a different name...), Guts which increase your ability to ''SMAAAAASH!!!'' (critical hit) enemies in battle. The battle system is ripped right out of Dragon Quest, 5 or so commands. The battle system has you either pick: Attack, Parry, Item, PSI and 1 unique command depending on what character you're selecting. Sometimes the battles are a tad on the redundant side and may make some people want to avoid as many battles as they can (especially in some dungeons..) but the battles are very strategy oriented, you're gonna need a different strategy for every enemy in the game. Such is the battle system...on to the basic RPG elements, going around on the overworld. You'll wander around towns, buying items, selling items, walking into people's houses without even knowing them. It's obvious stuff right there. The modern twist to this game makes the character's choice of weapons quite interesting, Ness uses a baseball bat or yo-yo for his weapons, Paula uses cooking pans, Jeff uses toy guns and Poo (great name o_-) just uses his fists. If you're a fan of the Dragon Warrior games, you'll like the old-school RPG gameplay...although some don't like it...~_~, I think it's great.

Story: 8/10
While it feels that your purpose in the game is just to get to the other cities of Eagleland, you're really on a quest to defeat an evil being from the future. Since the main villain of the game is in the future and you don't see him until the end of the game, you're faced with your annoying fat neighbor Pokey as the villain throughout the game until you get to the very end of Earthbound and man will Pokey make you want to hurt him badly. Each character has his/her own background and at least a tad bit of character development...well, I dunno about that (remember, this game was meant to be old-skool). You'll talk to talking monkeys, big globs of goo, rats, little bees, you name something odd and chances are that you'll see it in Earthbound. The game's humor is the best part of the game, the NPCs always have some humorous lines, while some are dumb, some will make you laugh out loud. When you get to Moonside, don't question your sanity as the game will turn from weird to...very very WEIRD!! You will be asking yourself ''What in the world is going on?'' in various points of the game. The characters are somehow always being followed by a camera man that drops from the air to take pictures of the characters at certain points of the game and tells you to yell out ''Fuzzy pickles''...heh, Earthbound is like a really weird cartoon, which is a good thing! If you're looking for an RPG with the strangest characters ever, turn to Earthbound.

Earthbound spans about 25-30 hours of gameplay but can differ for a variety of gamers, there are millions of fans around the world (most in Japan) that have named this game great because it is so unique and different from most RPGs, if you're a fan of old school RPGs (I don't know if FF fans would have the patients for this game, but that's too bad if they don't) you should definetly find any way possible to play this extreamly unique RPG.

(Deathless)

First off, this game is VERY hard. How they expected 10 year old kids to enjoy it I will never know. Throughout this review I will point out all the good and bad points of this Super Nintendo game and once great cartoon.

Story- The basic story is that you control Eek and you have to go through 6 levels, 3 stages each, helping your friends. In the first level, a blind grandmother just starts walking and you have too keep her from danger by killing enemies and kicking her to higher platforms. The first stage is easy, the second gets harder, and the third is practically impossible. Due to the fact that this game is extremely hard. I could not get past the first level to tell you the rest of the story. (2/10)

Gameplay- The controls are simple, one button will kick grandma up so she can reach higher platforms, another will brandish Eeks weapon(a fish, O_o) for killing enemies, and the other one makes Eek jump. The controls can be very frustrating and it does not make the game fun. (3/10)

There was only 1 thing this game needed to make it decent, and that is a Level Select code. I searched all over and there aren't any on the internet. This is one of those classic games where when you die you have to start all over again. But the game is not fun, so when you die you will most likely turn the game off instead of trying again. I couldn't even get past the first level and I consider myself pretty good at video games.

Graphics- The graphics are okay. There's nothing special about them. Some things have great detail while others do not. (4/10)

Sound- The sound is also decent. I have heard worse on Super Nintendo games. All 3 stages of each level have the same music, that is something I would have changed. (3/10)

Rent or Own?- Neither. There are only 2 reasons you should even try this game. And that's if you either got it for free or are over at a friends house who has it and you just want to see how bad it is. I can't believe that I spent $12 for this game. Even though it was sealed and came with a kickass poster, it wasn't worth it.

Don't forget, this review is from a person who was a fan of the Eek the Cat show. Sadly, this game does not follow the great legacy of the show.
