PREMISE: For hundreds of years, the legendary Transylvanian vampire known as Dracula has stalked the night, feeding on the life blood of the living and inspiring evil wherever he set foot. For hundreds of years, it has been the self-appointed job of the Belmont family to seek out the places where Dracula and his followers would dare to abide and free them from the vampire's curse.
This is a venerated series of action games whose roots are in the 8-bit days of computer gaming and which continues in new games and spinoffs as of this date.
IMPRESSIONS: The Castlevania series is legendary for its overall excellence in side-scrolling platform action, and the two SNES/SFC titles are no exception. The first is a souped-up port of the revered NES/FC game of the same name and is considered by many to be the best version of that title to date - Rage Games praises its gameplay and music in particular. The second was ported from the PC Engine CD-ROM game of the same name and suffered in the
translation; however, it was the first to employ anime- graphics in its design (which would come to their fruition in the highly regarded Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for the Playstation).
VARIATIONS: In practice with many other SNES/SFC titles, the first Castlevania game for this console has the word "Super" tacked on front. All titles are listed here for convienence's sake.
Super Castlevania 4 - 1995, released in Japan under the title Akumajo Dracula 4.
Castlevania 5: Vampire's Kiss - 1996, also known as Vampire Killer, released in Japan under the title Akumajo Dracula X, and in Europe as Dracula X: Rondo of Blood.

PREMISE: This is based on a little-known series from the fertile mind of anime sensei Go Nagai (Manzinger Z, Cutey Honey, Violence Jack).
IMPRESSIONS: Strikes me as a kid's side scroller - I mean, beating up cherry trees? C'mon! Kick, punch, jump, yawn - you'll be a victim of attention deficit disorder if you play for more than five minutes. |

borPREMISE: A typical World Cup soccer sim with obvious likenesses to Konami's International Superstar Soccer
IMPRESSIONS: More impressive than the latter G/MD port, but still not up to snuff with other SNES soccer games. I suppose it's good for folks who are more into arcade action than realistic gameplay. |

PREMISE: YACEG pool sim, with the endorsement coming from the Billards Masters of America.
IMPRESSIONS: Loads of options allow you to play just about any kind of pool game you want, from homebrew freestyle all the way to official tournament play and everything inbetween. No fancy graphics, but great gameplay. It doesn't have Side Pocket's pizzaz, but it's the better-playing game.

PREMISE: A freak accident has almost destroyed civilization and unloosed ancient horrors upon a ruined world. You are one of a team of six mercenaries for hire, making your talents and marksmanship available to those requiring your rather unique services. A steam-punk sci-fi shooter that appears to have borrowed some of its ideas from both
William Gibson and Hayao Miyazaki.
IMPRESSIONS: Man, is this cool or what? It does for sci-fi shooters what Gauntlet did for fantasy shooters. Yet another legendary Amiga game receives a decent port, although they could have done a little better on the music. It's still superior to the Genesis BGMs, though. |

PREMISE: You play the part of a wizard in a deep underground cavern. Your job is to create a dungeon which must be steadily expanded to restore life to the ravaged land above. Foolhardy adventurers who unwittingly damage the life-giving dungeon eco-system must be cast out.
IMPRESSIONS: Has everything you might expect in a Japanese SNES RPG - top-notch graphics, excellent music, an involved plot, and a heavy dose of the language. RPG fans may want to try and stumble through it anyway, because it is original and rather neat.

PREMISE: SNES/SFC port of the popular and difficult computer chess game.
IMPRESSIONS: This is considered to be the first of the so-called "modern" chess simulators. It may seem cheesy now, but you have to remember what we had back then - nothing worth remembering unless you're a sadist for text, black- and-white, or three-color IBM PC versions, almost all of which were fairly beatable. This appears to be a direct port of the Amiga version, and retains almost all of the sophistication that caused it to set the standard that all other chess sims have followed to this day. |

PREMISE: Chester Cheetah is best known as the popular mascot for the Frito-Lay snack food Cheetos. So popular are his animated commercials that Frito-Lay authorized two run-and-jump computer games based on the chracter.
IMPRESSIONS: Mundane platformers that seems to be populated with all sorts of characters and graphics that must have escaped from a rejected Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon. Yawn - more Mario wannabes. At least the graphics are kinda cool, but I'll pass just the same - I don't care for Cheetos, anyway
VARIATIONS: Chester Cheetah: Too Cool to Fool - 1992, Chester must recover his stolen moped.
Chester Cheetah: Wild Wild Quest - 1994, Chester must recover the stolen map that will lead him to Hip City. |
