PREMISE: Chester Cheetah is best known as the popular mascot for the Frito-Lay snack food Cheetos. So popular are his animated commercials that Frito-Lay authorized two run-and-jump computer games based on the chracter.
IMPRESSIONS: Mundane platformers that seems to be populated with all sorts of characters and graphics that must have escaped from a rejected Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon. Yawn - more Mario wannabes. At least the graphics are kinda cool, but I'll pass just the same - I don't care for Cheetos, anyway
VARIATIONS: Chester Cheetah: Too Cool to Fool - 1992, Chester must recover his stolen moped.
Chester Cheetah: Wild Wild Quest - 1994, Chester must recover the stolen map that will lead him to Hip City.

PREMISE: Based on the 1991 manga/anime about a typical Japanese elementary-grade schoolgirl named Sakura, her friends, the adults with whom she interacts, and her life in general. The series titles comes from Sakura's nickname,
Chibi Maruko, which means "little round-faced child."
IMPRESSIONS: Interesting, if you're into shojo games for the grade schoolers. Otherwise, you're best advised to move on.
VARIATIONS: Chibi Maruko-chan: Hopscotch 365 - 1991 by Epoch. More or less a side-scrolling board game that is nothing like the Namco release for the G/MD....
Chibi Maruko-chan 2 - 1995 by Konami. A radically different animal from its predecessor, this multigame offering....

PREMISE: A strictly Oriental take on the age-old game of Shanghai.
IMPRESSIONS: The one thing that makes this stand out from other such games are the backgrounds, which occasionally change colors to reflect different times of day or seasons of the year. Other than that, there's nothing to see here that an Occidental couldn't enjoy with Activision's Shanghai game. |

PREMISE: An updated version of the classic 8-bit arcade game by Broderbund Software. It was one of the first shooters with a twist - you not only shoot up the enemy, but you are also on a mission to rescue any captives you run across on the way.
IMPRESSIONS: Both graphics and sound have been extensively overhauled for the 16-bit port, but the basic gameplay remains the same. |

PREMISE: Mundane Street Fighter 2 clone featuring what has to be one of the weirdest assortment of fighters ever seen in such a a game.
IMPRESSIONS: Tasteless, cheap, and just plain stupid. If you think this port is bad, the Sega Saturn and Sony PSX versions are even worse. Only valued by bloodshot-eyed cart collectors and by few others.
VARIATIONS: Also known as Fighting Gods (don't ask me why...). The title is frequently shortened to Aniki Bakuretsu per the game intro.

Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie is one of the most popular and most sought after anime related Super Famicom games. It follows along the Macross: Do You Remember Love? movie storyline. The setting of the game is some time after the movie, but apparently before the launching of the SDF-2 Megaroad, detailed in the music video Flashback: 2012. There have been Macross games on most game systems: the Famicom, PC Engine, Super Famicom, MSX, Playstation, and Saturn. Scrambled Valkyrie is one of the most sought after Macross games.
After playing this game for just a few minutes, I saw why this game is so popular. All the hype about this game is well deserved, for this is a truly excellent game. This game hails from a time during the 16-bit era, when Macross games were actually well-made and decent to play. Among traditional 2-D side-scroller Macross shooters, the PC Engine Macross 2036 is also a fabulous game that features beautiful anime cutscenes with a story that revolves around Komillia, the daughter of Max and Millia. Macross: Do You Remember Love? is available for the Sega Saturn and Sony Playstation. Although it is a graphically beautiful game, it's gameplay, while not completely flawed, keeps it as a shooter only recommended for Macross fans. It does not stand out as a great shooter, and only interesting for Macross fans who want to rehash the events of the movie. I also own the original Macross game for the original 8-bit Famicom, but I do not have a Famicom system to play it on. Scrambled Valkyrie is by far my favorite Macross shooter. If you find it, I highly recommend getting it!
